GILWERN'S Hilary Clifford has won the Pen-y-Glyn County Ladies Bowling Association Open Singles Championship for 2009.
In the semi-final Hilary defeated Marlene Gamlin (Merthyr West End) 21-11, before going on to beat Marilyn Jones (Merthyr West End) 21-11 in the final.
This year Hilary also reached the semi-final stage of the Champion of Champions, and with Ceri Clark and Jean Rosser made up Gilwern's triples entry which reached the same stage in the competition.
Hilary is the secretary of Gilwern Ladies and this year's Junior Vice President of the Pen-y-Glyn County Ladies Bowling Association.
In the winter months she plays indoors for Gilwern in the Dragon League.
This year GIlwern have also enjoyed success at District Association level when the two youngest members of the club, brothers Jonathan and Jordan Jones played each other in the East Monmouthshire Bowls Association U25 singles competition.
After a close match full of excellent drawing bowls, on this occasion younger brother, 15-year-old Jordan came out on top winning 21-10.
As a club Gilwern have many talented players, but the club is desperately short of enough players to keep its teams going.

THERE was some good bowling, close matches and exciting finishes at Gilwern's Finals Day when fortune smiled on Colin Clifford who managed to win all five finals he played in.
Eira Hannigan won three out of four finals, including the Ladies, and Hilary Clifford and Jonathan Jones won two out of three
