Miss Wales has thanked family, friends and supporters for their messages from back home in Monmouthshire after Miss World was postponed and she was forced to self-isolate over Christmas in Puerto Rico.

The organisers of the world famous beauty contest pulled the plug just hours before the December 16 event was due to go ahead, after 19-year-old Olivia Harris and 22 other contestants tested positive for Covid.

Former Caldicot High pupil Olivia posted just before Christmas Day: "We will be back! And stronger than ever. Thank you to everyone for all the lovely messages I have received over the last week.

"To fill you in, The Miss World finale was postponed last week due to a rise in Covid cases. Although disappointing after four weeks of hard work we all knew it was the safest decision.

"Unfortunately, I was one of the girls who tested positive for Covid and as a result I remain in quarantine in Puerto Rico and will do so over the holiday period."

Fifteen members of the Miss World staff also tested positive for Covid, but the Miss Wales organisation reported that Olivia was feeling fine.

Olivia added: "The Miss World Organisation have ensured we are receiving the very best standard of care and I would like to thank them and of course my director Paula L Abbandonato for keeping me safe and for the re-organisation of everything.

"I know a few of the Miss World team have stayed on here to support us rather than returning home to their families and I am eternally grateful to them.

"Yesterday we received the amazing news that the finale has now been rescheduled for March.

"This is the most welcome news as we will now be able to showcase our hard work to the world."

She added: "I have met the most amazing girls here who have truly become like family and not being able to say goodbye was so hard.

"At least now we will reunite and celebrate this amazing sisterhood together.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the amazing team of wonderful people that have supported me through this journey⦠@misswales, Jayne’s Boutique, Cardiff Diamonds, Stacey Clarke photo weddings, Danielle Latimer @izzie.harris. Also to the fantastic pageant community and fan sites and of course my fabulous family and friends.

"For now I wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas - Nadolig Llawen xx."

A spokesperson for Miss Wales confirmed in a post: "Regrettably, Miss Wales is one of the contestants to have tested positive with Covid while at Miss World.

"While she is not displaying any symptoms, she is of course now required to follow quarantine rules and cannot return home to Wales just yet.

"Olivia is a fabulous individual and has remained calm and professional throughout."

Show host Peter Andre said he was flying back to the UK after the shock postponement.

"Seeing how hard everyone has worked leading to this finale, I feel terrible for the contestants and crew. I hope those who have tested positive will be ok," said the star.
