Goytre - 3

Seven Sisters - 0

LEE Grimes was the star of the show for Goytre on Saturday when his well-taken hat-trick helped steer the Plough Road side to a 3-0 victory over Seven Sisters.

With Darren Haines, Kevin Wallace and captain Craig Jollife all unavailable for this Welsh League Division Three encounter, manager Ian Rosser had to reshuffle a team who responded brilliantly and outplayed the visitors in all departments.

From the kick-off Goytre applied all the early pressure to little in way of reply by the Sisters.

The home-side's opportunity to put points on the board came in the fifteenth minute when Graham Mason was pulled down from behind by a despairing tackle from a Fairfield defender.

Grimes took the subsequent penalty and made no mistake from the spot.

Within minutes Goytre should have increased their lead when Mason opened up the visitor's defence for James Wilkins, whose shot, although beating the keeper, just went wide of the net.

Phil Melville brought the best out of the Seven sisters keeper with an outstanding 35 yard power driver which was just finger-tipped around the net.

However, the Goytre were not to be denied for long, and shortly after Grimes pounced on a pass from Carl Evans, rounded the keeper, and calmly slotted the ball into the corner of the net.

The second-half started in the same vein as the first, with Goytre forcing numerous corners, and defenders Lee Waddon and Dean Taylor just putting headers over the bar.

Grimes's third and final goal of the day came on the 70th minute mark when James Wilkins crossed into the box, and was met by Grimes who got between the keeper and defender to side foot into the corner of the net.

Ian Rosser, Mark Jones, and Andy Walsh came on as substitutes for the final 20 minutes, and this combination afforded Matthew Cameron with a great chance to put Goytre out of sight.

However, the Fairfield keeper capped a fine performance with an excellent save.

Next week Goytre will face a stern test when they travel for an encounter with league leaders AFC Porth.
