Goytre Wharf is to become a flagship for The Monmouthshire, Brecon and Abergavenny Canals Trust, and Canal and River Trust Volunteers when this popular information centre is reopened supported by Alvechurch Boat Company.
A landmark agreement was signed between the partners to open the centre weekly in the new year.
An open day will take place on Saturday, December 3, people with an interest in canals will be able to meet representatives from the trusts and sign up as a volunteers to operate the centre.
The Wharf is an ideal canalside location for educational visits. The centre and facilities will transform sleeping heritage into a welcoming place rich in industrial archaeology set in a rural landscape. People of all ages and abilities will be able to find out about the history and wildlife of the area, the links with the Blaenavon World Heritage site, other historic places and visitor attractions.
Visitors can come to relax, have a cup of tea or meal in the restaurant, hire a boat, or enjoy an event, and during 2017 take an organised cruise on board the ‘Lord Raglan’.
There will be something for everyone.A visit will raise students and visitors awareness of the importance and historical significance of the area as well as being a fun experience.
Volunteers will play an important role in ensuring the experiences at Goytre Wharf are educational, informative and fun, and the working agreement between MBACT, CRT and ABC will ensure that the site offers a full range of experiences.For more information visit https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/
