Pentwynmawr Athletic - 2

GOVILON hit the Division One top spot and retained their unbeaten record in the club's recent away day at Pentwynmawr Athletic.

It was by no means an easy victory against a determined and talented Pentwynmawr who took the lead on 15 minutes following a defensive mix up which allowed Mike Coleman to steal in and head past Morris in Govilon's goal.

Another header moments later caused more problems but Morris saved well, before Govilon started to exert pressure of their own when central defender Mark Waddon, who was soon to leave the pitch with a hamstring injury, headed close from Ben Bannon's expertly delivered corner.

Pentwynmawr struck the bar from a free kick which was a taste of what was to come, as the score remained 1-0 at half time.

Govilon looked rejuvenated from the start of the second half and when a ball fell loose in the Pentwynmawr box it was Jamie Laurent who latched onto it to volley home for the Govilon equaliser.

More disarray followed for Pentwynmawr and it took a desperate goal-line clearance which struck the underside of their crossbar before ricocheting to safety for them not to concede another goal.

Govilon got their lead with 20 minutes remaining when Ben Bannon sprayed a defence splitting pass to Stephen Smith - a recent hat trick hero for Govilon's Gwent Central league side who had the composure to pick his spot and get Govilon's all important second goal.

Two minutes later Govilon were amongst the goals again when Craig Norman headed into the path of Dean Morgan who adjusted his stride to fire home from a narrow angle.

Pentwynmawr, however were not finished and scored with an unstoppable free kick as the game drifted to full time but not before they launched another raid and it took a point blank save from Morris to make sure Govilon took all three points.

Govilon are not in action again until Saturday, September 25 when they travel to Undy United.

Elsewhere in Division One, the Blaenavon Blues were stung without mercy by the Clydach Wasps who beat them on their own turf 2-7.

Meanwhile in Division Two, a newly-relegated Mardy recorded their first win of the season when they beat Cromwell in true cavalier style to the tune of 1-4.

In Division Three, the Abergavenny Thursdays season is off to another hellish start. After being mashed 10-2 by Lucas Cwmbran, the Pen-y-Pound players were beaten 1-2 by Rhymney on Saturday and as a result now sit one from bottom.

Lastly but not least, Goytre are through to the next round of the Welsh Cup after an impressive 3-1 victory over Welsh League Division One's Caerau Ely.

Played at Plough Road, Goytre's Craig Joliffe, Chris Pritchard, and Luke Prosser all fired home the shots that ensured their club's cup ambitions stay alive.

Currently sitting on the second branch of the Welsh League Division Three tree, Goytre are the only team in the division to remain unbeaten. A record they will look to retain when they face Cwmbran Town at home this Saturday.
