Coed Eva Athletic - 1

GOVILON were slow off the mark against mid-table Coed Eva at Cwmbran Park with goalkeeper Sam Morris making three smart saves within the first twenty minutes.

Yet Morris could not prevent Coed Eva taking the lead when a shot scraped the inside of his post and found the net to see the visitors trailing at half time.

Govilon stepped up a gear in the second half and Craig Norman headed against the bar before both Laurent and Morgan fired in shots following which the Coed Eva defence survived a vociferous penalty claim for handball as referee Cotterell waved away the appeal.

Craig Norman went close with another headed effort but it was Jamie Laurent who brought his side level when his drive found the bottom corner of the net. Dean Morgan's shot was well saved after he let fly following his strong run from midfield and Coed Eva were happy to concede a corner from another Laurent strike.

Rhys Whiteman's pile driver was thwarted when it struck the leg of a Coed Eva defender, and Laurent's effort was well saved by their keeper. Leon Gilchrist almost won the game in the closing stages when he met a long ball and chipped over the keeper only to see his lob strike the side netting. On Saturday Govilon entertain a high flying and newly promoted side in PILCS (3.00pm)

Abertillery Excelsiors - 1

Blaenavon Blues - 1

FOLLOWING a disappointing performance last week to christen the new ground, Blaenavon Blues bounced back on Saturday with a hard-earned away win against Abertillery Excelsiors.

The Blues started the game positively and dominated the opening exchanges.

James Cox's good first-half performance reached its climax with a superb shot which left the keeper stranded and flew into the top corner of the net to kick off the scoring.

Abertillery then managed several decent counter-attacks down their right-hand side either side of an effort from the Blues striker Matthew Cox which was saved well by the Aber keeper.

Another attack down the right led to Abertillery's equaliser which took a wicked deflection off unlucky Blues' defender Ryan Huish, who along with Brad Jones and Lee Wathen, had a solid game at the back.

The second half began with the Blues on the back foot as Abertillery come on strong.

However, it wasn't long before the midfield trio of James Cox, Tom Goodwin and Ryan Simons (who was outstanding on his full debut for the first team) took control of the game, ensuring the Blues' defence was well protected.

Blaenavon's second goal came five minutes from time when a corner by Jack Moore was headed into the roof of the net by Leigh Carrick, whose work-rate was phenomenal throughout.

Abertillery should have drawn level in the dying seconds of the match when Blues Captain Lee Wathen misjudged the bounce of the ball and let the Abertillery striker through on goal.

The Aber player beat Blues' keeper Lee Jones with his lob, only for it to rebound off the post to be cleared by the defence.

Nonetheless the Blues' hung in there and managed to come away with a vital three points.

This weekend the Blues welcome Abercarn United to the Memorial ground for a 3pm kick off.
