Rogerstone - 3

Govilon - 0

GWENT County Division Two leaders and defending champions Govilon made a surprise exit out of the Gwent FA Amateur Cup on Saturday after a well organised Rogerstone outfit brushed them casually aside.

Govilon were under pressure from the start and Rogerstone almost scored after four minutes when Nathan Evans fired in a free kick which goalkeeper Morrison pushed away, only for the ball to fall for John Abbott who fired wide from close range.

However, Govilon were undone seconds later when defensive confusion allowed Evans to fire into an unguarded net as Rogerstone grabbed a valuable early lead.

Shortly after Govilon had a chance to equalise when Matthew Ham set up Dean Morgan, but the marksman's aim failed him this time around as he pulled his shot just wide of goal.

Rogerstone struck again on 20 minutes with a set piece which saw Abbott on hand to net from Evans' free kick after the ball spilled out of the Govilon keeper's hands.

Govilon came close again when Rhys Whiteman powered in a shot which tested Chorley in the Rogerstone goal, but the ball was subsequently pushed over the bar to safety as half-time approached.

Rogerstone maintained their pressure from the restart and Morrison produced an acrobatic save in the first minute, but had no answer when a slick left wing move from Rogerstone saw them net with a delicate flick from close range.

Minutes later Govilon had their best chance to get back into the game when the marauding Dean Morgan was felled in the box.

Richard McCarthy was handed a second chance when his spot kick, which Chorley saved was ordered to be re-taken by referee Anslow for movement by the goalkeeper, but McCarthy hit out of luck when Chorley produced another save.

As the game drifted towards its conclusion, Matthew Stevens produced the only telling effort when his shot forced Chorley to make a fingertip save to keep his goal intact .

Referee Anslow blew for full-time and Govilon lost their grip on the trophy they captured at Pen-y-Pound last May.

Next Saturday Govilon return to league action, anxious to maintain their position as Division Two pacesetters with an away trip to Trethomas Bluebirds (2.00pm) before returning home for more league action the following Saturday when they entertain Llanhilleth Athletic (2.00pm).
