A spot of festive flavoured chaos hit Abergavenny’s Cross Street this afternoon when the mighty and magnificent Christmas Tree perched regally outside of the Angel Hotel took a topple.
The towering tree has been the talk of the town for some days now, and has delighted many a Christmas shopper and merrymaker as they wander the town infused with a Yuletide glow.
Yet sadly the big old green dude didn’t have the legs to hold out for the big day, and has fallen before crossing the December 25th finish line.
Thankfully no-one was hurt when this monster of a tree went belly up, and a clean-up operation is under way.
One bemused onlooker told the Chronicle, “In my opinion it was only a matter before something that big in a pot that small hit the decks. I’m just surprised it didn’t happen sooner.”
The Chronicle contacted the Angel but they didn’t wish to make a statement on the incident at this time.
However, a local Xmas tree expert called Rudolph, informed us that in their opinion the big fall could have been caused by a number of things.
Rudy explained, “A common mistake a lot of civilians make when it comes to playing around with a Christmas tree this size is they taper the base or cut it at an angle. If you know your Xmas trees this is a big no go. It reduces the surface area of plant tissue that absorbs water and makes it very tricky for trees to stay upright in the pot. Another schoolboy error is drilling a hole in the base of the trunk. It doesn’t improve water uptake it just makes the tree more unstable.”
Rudy added, “Of course the combination of the recent high winds and a small pot is a recipe for disaster in my books. In my opinion it’s always best to leave this sort of thing to the experts to avoid any future calamities.”
It’s is not yet known if the award-winning Hotel intends to replace the fallen fir, yet one thing’s for sure, every Angel needs a tree at Christmas.
