For the third year in a row King Henry VIII School in Abergavenny has announced outstanding GCSE results - the ‘best ever’ for the school according to head teacher Elspeth Lewis .
“Throughout the year, Year 11 students have demonstrated an exceptional attitude to learning and excellent attendance,” she said.
“They made the most of revision sessions and the personalised intervention and support on offer leading to well-deserved results.”
The number of pupils achieving five or more grades A*-C including English and maths has risen to 70%, an improvement of 6.5%. There have also been superb improvements in maths with A*-C grades increasing by 6.5% to 76% and in science A*-C grades increased by 26% to 94%. These results were matched by English where 76% of pupils attained an A*-C grade.
The number of pupils that gained five or more GCSEs at grades A*-C was 94% and grades A*-G 99%.
There were a number of exceptional results with three pupils gaining ten or more A* grades and 13 pupils gaining ten or more grades at A*/A. In addition nearly a quarter of the year group achieved five or more GCSE grades at A*-A.
Within these results there are a number of individual pupils who have overcome adversity and are to be congratulated on their efforts. In addition for the past three years outcomes for pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds have risen significantly. All pupils in year 11 left with a recognised qualification.
“These results are a reflection of the hard work and commitment shown by the pupils and staff of the school,” said Mrs Lewis.
“These achievements are underpinned by the excellent teacher, student relationships, supportive parents and the backing provided by the Governing Body. We wish all of our pupils our congratulations, a fantastic year group and we wish them all the best for the future.“
Following on from King Henry’s outstanding A Level results and amazing GCSE results the school would be welcoming back record numbers into the sixth form for post 16 study, she said.
