During their Mayoral year, it is usual for the Mayor of Abergavenny to raise funds for their chosen charity.

Councillor Tony Konieczny who was Mayor for two years has raised funds for the Windsor Suite at Nevill Hall Hospital as this facility has a special personal connection.

The Windsor Suite provides an important service in this area enabling cancer patients to receive treatment close to home.

The funding will be spent in the creation of a new ‘Windsor Suite’ which will be able to accommodate more patients, although at present it is not decided if the new facility will retain the name Windsor Suite.

Ex-Mayor Konieczny raised £5700 with the assistance of fundraisers John and Sylvie Sharland, storyteller Daniel Morden, newsagent Paul Cable who is known locally for his painting on buildings and Marion Pearce and Jeremy Gass from Abergavenny Community Centre.

Although this Mayoral term has been for two years, most of the fundraising took place in 2019-20 due to covid restrictions in 2020-21.

John and Sylvie Sharland raised funds by having charity collecting buckets outside various supermarkets, Daniel Morden contributed two story telling performances, Marion Pearce and Jeremy Gass arranged a dinner and raffle at the Community Centre and Paul Cable decorated his newsagents window in exchange for a donation towards the Mayor’s charity.

Unfortunately, two fundraising concerts that the Mayor had arranged for March and April 2020 had to be cancelled due to the pandemic.

Presenting the cheque to Grant Robinson, Senior Consultant at Nevill Hall Hospital Mayor Tony Konieczny said “I am delighted to be able to contribute towards the new Windsor Suite which is a vital facility for the local area.

‘‘I would personally like to thank everyone that helped me raise funds and generously donated towards the cause, I could not have raised such a large sum of money without the generosity of others”

Grant Robinson from Nevill Hall Hospital said “We are so grateful to the Mayor for this donation which is very much welcome at this time when we are creating a new welcoming space in the hospital to improve our cancer

care.”
