AN Abergavenny lady who was born and raised in France has been given the honour of representing Wales in the Petanque European Championships to be held in Slovenia this August.
23-year-old Berengere Demay, who plays for the Abergavenny Petanque Club, qualified alongside two other Welsh women in the WPA Ladies Qualifier to play for her adopted country in the European Ladies Championships.
Berengere who originally hails from Burgundy, told the Chronicle, "Growing up in France I always played Petanque for leisure, but it was not until I moved to Abergavenny six years ago to be with my boyfriend that I started playing seriously.
"Obviously Petanque is very popular in France, but since I've been in the UK I've noticed how it's popularity has continued to grow over here with each and every year."
As the Welsh Petanque Ladies team receive no funding from any outside sources to help finance their trip to Slovenia, they are always on the lookout for sponsorship.
