After dozens of worried people who work in Abergavenny town centre contacted The Chronicle to express their concerns over the loss of free parking during Eisteddfod week Monmouthshire County Council has come up with a solution in the shape of a permit holders’ car park at Lower Meadows.

As the countdown to the Eisteddfod reaches its final stages, concerned town centre workers contacted the Chronicle, worried that the closure of the town’s only free car park at Byfield Lane, would see them facing parking charges of up to £4 a day to get to work.

"I work part time and simply can’t afford to pay this," said one woman who works in a town centre business. "I’ve been asked to work extra hours during the Eisteddfod but that will cost me even more to park," she added.

After being contacted by local people MCC has come up with an eleventh hour solution to the problem in the shape of a temporary car park at Lower Meadow near Pen-y-Pound.

“Local businesses are invited to attend Abergavenny’s one stop shop with confirmation of their business address to be provided with permits for their staff to park free of charge at Lower Meadows,” said a council spokesman.

“The car park will be open daily from 7am to 7pm and will be managed by accredited traffic marshals.

"Any residents with parking permits will be able to use their permits in any car park other than Byefield Lane, which has been closed as it is the main access and egress point for the Eisteddfod’s park and ride service.

"Shoppers will be able to park in any of the council’s pay and display car parks or use the park and ride service free of charge."
