BOTH Usk's first and seconds had a Saturday to remember, as they both won comfortably and gained 22 points each in the process.

The firsts took the short trip to Croesyceiliog, whilst the seconds, currently languishing at the bottom of their league, entertained table-topping Chepstow.

At Croesy, the hosts won the toss and inserted Usk on a dry wicket. This proved an unwise move as Ian Clayton and Ollie James got off to a flying start.

The duo had brought up 61 in the tenth over, before Clayton departed for a whirlwind 43.

Ollie James, as has been his wont recently, took on the anchor role, whilst others played around him. With Mike Jones (36) 75 was put on for the third wicket, and with Neil Perrett (35) a further 76 was posted for the fourth wicket.

When Perrett fell, Usk were on 245 with five overs to go. As Usk sought quick runs, James was finally dismissed for a masterful 109. His innings had included 13 fours.

A quickfire 20 from Tom Lee ensured that Usk reached 280-7 from their 50 overs. For Croesy, Bakari and Beacham each picked up three wickets.

Croesy's reply got off to a laboured start, as Huw Waters put in a miserly spell, picking up a wicket in the ninth over.

Tom Robinson then came on first change and experienced success in his first over to help reduce the Croesy to 35-2 after 10 overs.

It was at this stage that Bakari joined Jones and the pair scored freely taking the score up to 101-2 in the 18th over.

At this score, James then removed Jones for 48. With no other Croesy batsman getting away, it fell to Bakari to take on Usk by himself.

His brave resistance kept Croesy in the hunt for a while, but with the run rate escalating, it became a question of whether the hosts could hold out for a draw.

However, they had not counted on Ollie James the bowler. James capped a fine all-round performance by removing the lower order and taking the vital wicket of Bakari.

Bakari had made a valiant 102, which included 12 fours and three sixes. It was fitting that when James took the final wicket it brought up figures of 8.5-0-53-5, and sealed an Usk victory with 13 balls to spare.

It cannot be very often that a cricketer scores a century and takes five wickets in a Premier league match.

Meanwhile back in Usk, Chepstow won the toss and elected to bat. The Usk bowlers got off to a terrific start, as both Jimmy Spencer and Jake Roderick struck early.

At 35-2, the hosts found themselves on top. Price (36) and Bennett (39) then consolidated for the visitors, as they took the Chepstow score up to 85 before Dave Edgerton caught and bowled Price.

With Spencer then removing Bennett and picking up a further scalp, momentum swung firmly back to Usk. With Julian Smith's spin bamboozling the lower order, Chepstow struggled to 166 all out. Smith finished with figures of 6.2-1-18-4, Spencer 10-0-44-3, and Roderick 9-3-21-1.

The hosts' reply got off to a dreadful start as Tony Kear fell for a duck. Fortunately for Usk, only two more wickets fell on 84 and 121 respectively, as Mike Kear (29), Richie Morris (56), Richie Barrett (40*) and Richie Rees (26*) all batted sensibly to see Usk home in the 33rd over.

Top scorer Morris's 56 included seven fours. If the weather holds over the next two weekends and the seconds win both games, then it is still possible for them to seal Premier League status for the next season.
