Gwent Police and St John Cymru Wales are determined to create a nation of lifesavers…
In September 2014, they launched an initiative which took Community Support Officers into all primary schools to deliver first aid training to Year 5 pupils.
The training material, which is aimed at pupils aged nine and ten, was designed by St John Wales and covers topics such as calling for the emergency services, the recovery position, CPR and choking.
The scheme is now well into its second year and to date nearly 5,000 pupils have taken part.
But the partners are keen to double that figure.
Pupils taking part in the scheme receive an individual certificate and first aid related puzzles and games to assist in their learning.
The training not only offers them basic first aid knowledge and gives them the confidence to act in an emergency situation also helps to develop their self-esteem and sense of responsibility.
Chief Superintendent Emma Ackland said, “This is a fantastic opportunity to work within the community, developing life skills in young people and at the same time raising the profile of St John Cymru, hopefully encouraging more people to get involved and be trained in emergency first aid.”
