A FAULTY air conditioning unit which ‘blew up’ and began pumping out smoke instead of fresh air sent fire engines screaming through Abergavenny Town Centre to deal with an incident at the Principality Building Society’s Frogmore Street branch on Tuesday afternoon.

Two engines attended the premises where staff had isolated the electricity supply and left the building safely, allowing crews to contain the faulty appliance and neutralise alarms and sprinklers.

The cost of the damage is not yet assessed but no members of staff or emergency personnel were hurt in the incident.
