Abergavenny Star Players began its life as a musical theatre group in 2017 when its founder, Molly Brickley-Clark, then only 19 years old, decided to put on a musical show to raise money for the Borough Theatre in Abergavenny after having performed there many times each year since around the age of three.
She put on the hugely challenging Jesus Christ Superstar in just 10 weeks which raised £2000 to help buy a much needed relay system for the theatre and the dressing rooms. That started more fundraising efforts when the next year the company did Made In Dagenham raising another £1300 for the theatre. Sadly, it all then came to a bit of a halt when the theatre closed for refurbishment and stayed closed for a very, very long time, then had to shut again due to the COVID lockdown.
By this time priorities had changed and Molly decided that shows were to be done to raise money for two charities, Saint David's Hospice care and Motor Neurone Disease Association, both of which had been invaluable during the time that both of Molly's grandparents needed end of life care. The next four shows- Rent in 2022, Chess in 2023, Carousel in 2024 and Sister Act in 2025 all raised money for these two charities. In addition, Molly and her company have put on a fundraising concert yearly at the theatre to raise even more.
“Now times are changing again, Molly, now 29 years old, and her company are doing one last musical at the theatre under the name of Abergavenny Star Players, as she and another local company, Forget Me Not Productions, (last seen at the theatre with their brilliant production of The Great British Bake Off) are to merge to become one magnificent company called Abergavenny Community Theatre (or ACT for short). Everyone is very excited about this, and it will mean more brilliant productions being brought to Abergavenny and keeping our wonderful local theatre buzzing ,” said a spokesman for the group
“ The final musical as Abergavenny star players is to be the wonderful Company by Stephen Sondheim. This will go back to the company's roots of a small time challenge with a small cast and an amazingly challenging score. The musical follows Bobbie, a single woman navigating love friendship and commitment in the city. It is a sharp and stylish show weaving together brilliantly observed moments blending humour, heart and insight into the complexities of modern relationships.
“Featuring beloved songs like Being Alive, The Ladies Who Lunch and You Could Drive a Person Crazy it's a musical which is as entertaining as it is thought provoking. Following the triumphant production of Sister Act last year, this promises to be an unmissable night of top quality local theatre. Whether you're a long time musical lover or just looking for a fantastic evening out, Company will have you laugh and humming the tunes all the way home. “
