A LANDMARK phone box in Raglan is not going to be adopted by the local community council.
Following a request from BT, members of Raglan Community Council considered adopting the traditional red phone box in Cuckoo's Row, after they were informed that it was to be removed by the telecommunications company through lack of use.
The company offered them the option of adopting the iconic phone box, without the internal equipment, as a monument for the village, a scheme they have already taken up with traditional phone boxes at Llandenny and Pen-y-Clawdd.
But Councillor Andrew Crump said that the phone box was not in a prominent position adding, "Times change and while it is a landmark, its not an important one as its tucked away from most of the local community."
Councillor Amanda Vaughan agreed and added: "Its disappearance will not be a loss to anyone."
The problem of its maintenance was raised by Councillor Trevor Phillips, adding, "It will be up to us to look after it and without feedback or help from local people it seems more than likely it will be neglected and prone to vandalism."
Posters asking the local community if they wanted to save the phone box were placed on the outside of the phone box, and Councillor Richard Moorby concluded, "It appears that nobody has expressed any interest in keeping the phone box so I suggest that we let it go."
Members voted unanimously at their last meeting not to adopt the phone box and allow the telecommunications company to take it away.
