ABERGAVENNY'S junior badminton players rounded off the season with another excellent set of results at both the Satellite, and the JSS finals.

The Satellite finals saw the top four ranked players and pairings from North and South Wales from the Satellite series competing to be overall Satellite champions.

As usual the U11's provided a positive start. In the Girls singles, Morgan Williams eased through her group before facing fellow Gwent squad player Kelly Saunders in the semi finals. Williams squeezed through 22-20 in a tight match, but despite a good performance lost out in the final. Williams and Saunders teamed up to win the doubles title defeating all other pairings by considerable margins.

Tom Whiteman and Evan Williams represented Abergavenny in the U11 Boys section. Williams narrowly missed out on a semi final place, but Whiteman cruised through both his group and his semi final.

In the final Whiteman faced strong opposition from Scott Oakes of North Wales. In an excellent match Whiteman came out on top 15-17, 15-10, 15-10 preserving his impressive unbeaten record in the Satellite singles competition.

Williams and Whiteman teamed up in the boys doubles proving too strong for the other pairings.

Excellent doubles play took the boys to the title, not having lost a match in the entire satellite series.

Next up the U13's, Abergavenny players James Ellaway, Robin Freeland, and Rhys Schanzer delivered more tremendous performances.

Freeland narrowly missed out on a semi final place, but Schanzer and Ellaway both came through their groups to meet in the first semi final. Schanzer pushed Ellaway all the way before losing out narrowly, setting Ellaway up for the final where he went on to win the title 16-14 15-7 with some assured play. Ellaway teamed up with fellow Gwent player Matthew Parsley for the boys doubles. After a close match against Freeland and Schanzer, Ellaway and his partner completed a fine day for Abergavenny and Gwent by securing yet another title.

The JSS finals were held in the Welsh Institute of Sport in Cardiff, seven Abergavenny players having made it through the demanding qualification tournaments.

Morgan Williams competing in the U11 singles put in strong performances whilst narrowly losing two matches, but still overcoming two players who travelled from Cheshire.

James Ellaway qualified for the U13 singles in his first year at the U13 level, a creditable achievement in this strong set of tournaments. Despite playing well throughout the day against strong opposition, Ellaway narrowly missed out on the semi's, nevertheless a very positive performance.

Fellow U13 boys Rhys Schanzer and Robin Freeland qualified in the doubles in their first year of tournament play. Freeland and Schanzer competed well picking up a victory in their strong group but were ultimately not quite experienced enough to progress to the final stages.

Another first year competitor Alison Freeland qualified in U17 Girls Singles and despite the high standard, Freeland put in some excellent performances to significantly challenge all of her more experienced opponents.

Tom Whiteman and Evan Williams contested the U11 boys singles. Williams narrowly lost out on a semi place once again, but Whiteman blazed through his group and semi setting up another final with Scott Oakes.

Whiteman played exceptionally well to win the title 21-11 21-11, completing a fantastic double in his debut year.

Whiteman and Williams once again teamed up to win the U11 Boy's doubles title, remaining undefeated over the course of the season. Another tremendous achievement for the boys.

These performances crowned an excellent season for all involved in the junior badminton club.

To quote the Abergavenny Junior Coach 'This is without doubt the strongest set of juniors I have had the pleasure to coach'.

Some of the players mentioned above will travel to the Welsh Junior National Badminton Championships in June, they will be joined by fellow Abergavenny Welsh junior U17 internationals, Alice Palmer, Sam Gorell, and Hannah Killick. Good Luck to them all.
