Govilon - 3
Albion Rovers - 2
GOVILON'S storming run of success continued on the weekend as they knocked Division One table-toppers Albion Rovers out of the County Motors Challenge Cup.
Albion are unbeaten in league competition this season and between them and Govilon both sides conspired to produce a pulsating cup tie.
Govilon stole ahead in the second minute when a Jamie Laurent corner to the far post was headed back across goal by Richard McCarthy for Rhys Whiteman to pounce with his head to leave Ben Fletcher with no chance.
Dean Morgan was next to test Fletcher with a drive to the top corner which he pushed over the bar, and moments later Morgan was only denied by a last gasp tackle.
Cup holders Rovers were in no mood to lose their title and equalised after 15 minutes when awarded a free kick from which a header crept into the goal via the base of the post.
Spurred on Rovers saw plenty of possession and took the lead thanks to a Govilon own goal. More Rovers chances followed from their fine flowing football but the Govilon defence held firm for a 1-2 half time score line.
Govilon equalised mid-way through the second half when Dean Morgan's cross found Jamie Laurent who cut inside two defenders to score what proved to be the goal of the game. Govilon were beginning to enjoy the greater possession and when Dean Morgan was through on goal with only Fletcher to beat the goalkeeper brought him down and referee Fewings pointed to the spot.
Ice cool Richard McCarthy thumped the spot kick into the net despite a desperate dive from Fletcher as Govilon progress into the last eight.
Govilon are in a different cup competition on Saturday when as holders of the John Payne Barber Gwent FA Amateur Cup they travel to defend their title against Tredegar Athletic in another early 1.30pm kick off.
