A DISPERSAL order in Abergavenny has helped to reduce incidents of anti-social behaviour in problem areas of the town.
The order, which came to an end on September 25, was initially introduced 12-months ago to reduce levels of anti-social behaviour, particularly in the area of Fairfield Car Park.
After a successful first term the order was extended for another six months in March.
A dispersal order was implemented following complaints from residents about anti-social driving and behaviour such as loud music being played, wheel spins and handbrake turns, shouting, swearing and littering.
In the six months before the dispersal order was introduced there were 33 reports of anti-social behaviour at Fairfield Car Park on Park Road.
During the first six-month period of the dispersal order, there were just five calls reporting anti-social behaviour at the same location, an 85 percent reduction.
In the second six-month period there were 15 reports of anti-social behaviour at the car park, equating to a 55 percent reduction..
Dispersal orders give police officers and PCSOs the power to direct any groups of two or more people, or vehicles, to leave a specified area.
Anyone who refuses to leave, or returns to the area within 24 hours, when ordered to do so can be arrested under the Antisocial Behaviour Act 2003.
In the 12-months the dispersal order was in place, 96 people were dispersed from the area and received warning letters.
Nobody was arrested for returning to the area after they were dispersed.
Neighbourhood Sergeant Samantha Elliott, of Abergavenny Neighbourhood Policing Team, said,"During the past year reports of incidents in areas previously blighted by anti-social behaviour have been reduced dramatically.
"In the longer term we are working with our partner agencies such as Monmouthshire County Council, who are the car park owners, to provide a more permanent solution to the problem."
