LAST Friday, on the third attempt, Usk and Cardiff met in the Welsh Cup at the Diamond Club Ground, only for Cardiff to win narrowly by two runs.
It was a happier time for the firsts on Saturday, when they beat Tondu by 51 runs at the Athletic Club Ground.
The visitors won the toss and elected to field. Despite the loss of an early wicket, Matt Birrell (34) and Seb Warwick (24) helped guide Usk up to 71-3 after 19 overs.
Usk then took the game by the scruff of the neck. Huw Waters (49) and Mark Tamplin (46) stuck together for 28 overs in adding 103 for the fourth wicket, and with a late thrash by the lower middle order, the hosts managed to reach 191-6 from their allocated 50 overs.
Tondu's reply got off to a dreadful start losing early wickets, as Usk's opening bowlers, Waters and Vinnie Kay, both struck in the opening 10 overs.
With first change bowlers Tom Robinson and Mike Read also picking up wickets in the opening spells, Tondu were reeling on 19-4 after 12 overs.
Ollie James also joined the party as Tondu limped up to 65-6 from 28 overs. The visitors managed to rally to 140 all out in the 42nd over, however the Usk victory had never really been in doubt.
Meanwhile, down in Tondu, second team captain for the day, Neil Perrett, won the toss and elected to field.
This looked a smart move as as Usk's bowlers went about their business efficiently. Despite one major partnership, between Vigas (71) and Townsend (47) the remaining Tondu batsmen all struggled as they made 161 all out from their 50 overs.
Perrett himself starred amongst Usk's bowlers and he finished with figures of 9-0-31-4.
A target of 162 did not look beyond Usk's batsmen, especially as Henry Lewis (36) was helping to add 49 for the first wicket in the first 10 overs.
However, this was as good as it got for the visitors, as wickets began to tumble. By the 26th over, Usk had collapsed to 89-7. Despite the best efforts of Charlie Watkins (25*), Usk were dismissed for 134 with five overs left.
This Saturday sees Usk first team travel to neighbours Newport, while the seconds entertain the same opponents. Both games start at 1pm. On Sunday afternoon, the firsts are at home to Croesyceiliog in the National Twenty20 competition.
