A SPECIAL presentation was made to the Abergavenny family of Private Richard Hunt at the Royal Horticultural Show held in Cardiff recently.

Pte Hunt was with the second battalion the Royal Welsh when he died in 2009, just a week before his 22nd birthday and became the 200th British serviceman to die in Afghanistan.

And now one special variety of daffodil has been named the Welsh Warrior, in honour of the efforts and the ultimate sacrifice made by Pte Hunt.

The daffodil was chosen by Pte Hunt's mother Hazel to become the emblem of the charity she set up to support injured troops from Wales and their families and is known as the Richard Hunt Foundation.

Ron Scamp the owner of Cornwall-based Quality Daffodils originally sent Mrs Hunt six types of daffodils he had developed but hadn't named to choose from.

The family chose a tall daffodil that grows between 12 and 16 inches to honour Richard and named it the Welsh Warrior.

At the RHS in Bute Park, the daffodil expert Ron Scamp presented the new daffodil variety to Pte Hunt's family. He said that the bold and yellow trumpet daffodil was chosen because of its beauty.
