A WALK around Bailey Park following our story on Rhys Meadows who stepped on a syringe after playing rugby took place this week.

After the story local councillor and mayor John Prosser and councillor Jane Foulser met with Monmouthshire County Council officer Tim Bradfield and the PCSO for that area to discuss the problems in the park.

The group walked around Bailey Park and scoured that area, "Thankfully we didn't find any syringes," said councillor Prosser.

Although the group were relived that they didn't uncover any syringes there was a problem with broken glass, condom wrappers, rubbish, including a spoon and litter.

The 'walk around' came after we reported how 10-year-old Rhys was left traumatised when a needle penetrated through his boot.

The youngster, who attends Our Lady and St Michael's School, went to Nevill Hall and had to give blood samples and have an accelerated hepatitis vaccine and tetanus jab.

"We could not find syringes but we found broken glass which is being attended to. We have to remain vigilant," said councillor Prosser.

Mr Bradfield, Recreation Officer at MCC called a team out the same afternoon to clear the glass and rubbish.

He said, "We'd be very grateful if people who use the park would report anything untoward they see to the One Stop Shop."
