CONGRATULATIONS to Monmouthshire County Council on
the success of their composting service. This is a big step
forward on the road to a sustainable future.
It would be even more heartening if the council were to
take an even bolder step, and invest in an anaerobic
biodigester plant. Such a venture costs money of course,
but future returns ensure gains for the whole community.
Amongst these gains are a fuel supply to run their fleet of
vehicles; electricity for their offices and nearby buildings –
surplus electricity can be sold on to the national grid; heat
for their offices; the solid waste can be returned to the
land as a soil improver. I'm dreaming of course! No!
The technology is available, and well proven. Methane gas
is produced in the process, this is collected and used to
fuel vehicles, it burns well producing electricity, and
surplus heat can be piped to nearby buildings. Such
technology is being used in many parts of the UK. Best
practice councils have taken it on board. A visit to the
plant at Ludlow would convince our councillors of its
viability.
Don't be left behind and accused of being a fuddy duddy
council. Invest in the future – our future.
