A TRIO of talented pupils from an Abergavenny primary school has won their way through to the finals of a DVLA-backed competition to design a computer game based on road safety.

Hywel Lewis, Ella Gribbin and Sophia Elias from Our Lady and St Michael’s Primary School created a Safer Cycling game and have won through to the Welsh finals - and in doing so have already earned IT equipment worth £750 for the school.

The DVLA, along with the police and many road safety organisations, challenged pupils from all over Wales to create a game using SCRATCH, the fun computer coding language.

There were 5 challenges to choose from and the Abergavenny team chose to base their game on safe cycling; using the game to develop problem solving, communication and teamwork skills as well as improving their knowledge of computer programming.

The pupils have now been invited to attend the final in Swansea on Tuesday 28th November. The main winner of the DVLA code challenge will be chosen on the day.

Everyone who has registered for the live link in primary schools, libraries and community centres across the whole of Wales, and the audience on the day, will have a chance to vote for the best game.

The school and pupils are urging locals to cast their votes by logging onto http://dvlacodechallenge.dvla.gov.uk. The link closes on 24th November.
