CHRISTMAS officially started in Abergavenny with the switch-on of the town's lights and torch light parade.

The mayor, councillor John Prosser was given the all important role of switching the lights on Saturday afternoon at the Town Hall where more than 50 spectators took part in the festivities. Even Corky the Clown joined Santa and told the crowds a few festive jokes. As the night drew in councillor Prosser led the torch light procession through the town to Cibi Walk where the display in the precinct was also illuminated.

"I hope this year's lights have made up for the previous years. I want to thank everyone who made it a success and Corky, who turns up every year - I'm still splitting my sides with the jokes he told. There was good involvement with local traders, the Y Fenni Events Committee and the Town Council events committee.

"We had a good torch light procession and everyone was in great festive spirits. The town looks excellent, Abergavenny is certainly the place to shop this Christmas with all the lights and festive spirit. I advise everyone to come to Abergavenny to do your shopping and soak up the warm atmosphere."
