The twelve charity shops in Abergavenny have joined the Abergavenny Business Against Crime Partnership, which involves local shops and businesses working together to reduce shoplifting, anti-social behaviour and to catch offenders. The partnership uses 'Storenet' radios which helps keep them in contact with each other and gives descriptions and updates of offenders as soon as an offence takes place. This, along with the whistle blower scheme in Abergavenny market, has been very successful in crime prevention, detection and reduction along with the use of CCTV. The cost of Store Net is met by the retailers.  Unfortunately, recent weeks have seen thefts from charity shops, often with the same offender being suspected of stealing from multiple shops. As charity shops are in business to raise funds for their charity, the 'Storenet' radio system isn't an option as all funds raised go directly to the charity. To combat this, the partnership has introduced a ring around scheme which all twelve charity shops on Abergavenny Town centre are signed up to. If a shoplifter is suspected, the volunteers alert each shop one by one. Frances Webber, Manager of Cancer Research UK on High Street said, 'This is a great idea to reduce customer thefts. It also gives our volunteers the confidence and ability to try and do something to prevent thefts.  "We all feel very angry that people can steal from a charity that we feel so very passionate about and I know our customers who donate items feel the same.' CSO Amanda Yung added, ' Our Abergavenny Business Against Crime partnership has gone from strength to strength over the past year, with over 70 Business Watch members receiving updates via OWL, Market traders and other retail businesses making use of the Store Net Radio and CCTV. It is a pleasure to work with so many positive members, thank you to all involved.'
