AN ELDERLY resident in a Brynmawr care home had £1,820 of her savings stolen by an administrative assistant employed there, it has been claimed at Cardiff Crown Court.
Karen Morgan, 51, of Roundhouse Close, Nantyglo has pleaded not guilty to stealing the cash belonging to Edith Jones between March 2005 and March 2007.
Prosecutor James Wilson said Mrs Jones, who has subsequently passed away, was a resident at Crawshay House in Brynmawr.
Morgan had worked there since Easter 2004 and was responsible for drawing money from Mrs Jones' national savings account.
The cash obtained had to be put in a tin and recorded and counter signed. The money would be used by Mrs Jones at her request. The procedures were designed to safe guard Mrs Jones' money.
Mr Wilson said that there was concern about the account earlier this year and it emerged that there had been 30 withdrawals totalling £2,790 but only a total of £970 had been recorded.
On the date of each withdrawal Morgan had been working at the home. When arrested on suspicion of theft Morgan accepted she had withdrawn the monies but said she had passed it on to Mrs Jones' carer. "The lady," said Mr Wilson "Said she never handled any cash in this way."
