A Cardiff team who jokingly claimed “we thought it was speed dating” ended up taking part and winning last Saturday’s Raise the Roof Quiz, held at The Beaufort in Raglan.
Team members Simon Evans, Richard Morgan, John Richards and Terry Barrett finished just one point ahead of Gerry and his Pacemakers, with Raglan Winers and Diners a close third.
Monmouth AM Nick Ramsay asked the questions and nine teams took part. Button Moon took two prizes - one for the team with the best name and the booby prize for the lowest score.
As usual, the evening began with a hot supper of coq au vin and ended with a Grand Draw for some fabulous prizes, including £200 cash, two tickets for a Dragons Rugby Match and a case of wine from the Ancre Hill, Vineyard.
The event raised around £800 and marked one of the final fund raisers for what has been a very successful campaign, with the village raising over £50, 000 towards the £400,000 plus cost of funding urgent repairs to the roof of St Cadoc’s Church, a Grade ll Listed building, and the installation of a kitchen. From coffee mornings to concerts, from quizzes to treasure hunts and generous donations, the target set when the campaign was first launched in October 2013 has now been reached, and the Christmas Quiz at The Beaufort on December 28 will be the last one for Raise the Roof.
Church Warden and Committee Member Neville Crump said “a big thank you” to everyone for their support over the past four years. He also thanked all those involved in organising and participating in the evening’s quiz and grand draw, including those who had donated prizes. Thanks were also expressed to Miguel and his team at The Beaufort.
