Cantref ward in Abergavenny this Sunday celebrates its fifth open gardens event in aid of Target Ovarian Cancer.

There will be up to 15 gardens open to the general public between 11.30am and 5.30pm, centred on the area around Christ Church in North Street.

Throughout that time refreshments will be available at the church, while in one or two of the gardens there will be plant sales and also a dinosaur hunt for children.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to visit the award-winning sweet pea growers Jen and Lewis Morgan who featured on the BBC Gardeners World programme last year and to sample the delights of home-baked oven pizzas courtesy of the Abergavenny Baker, Rachel Watson.

Lizzie Timpson, a keen local gardener in North Street and the initial driving force behind the event, who lost her mother and cousin to ovarian cancer, has her fingers crossed for good weather on the day and hopes that as many people as possible will support this local community-based event.

“When we began this in 2013 we had no idea that we would still be going but I think that the people of Abergavenny and beyond enjoy a good look around other people’s gardens and like to swap ideas about growing plants and fending off the weeds!” she said.

“We raised over £4,000 last year and it would be wonderful if we could at least do the same again this year.”

So if you have an hour or two to spare and would like to support a local community raising money for a worthwhile cause then head to Cantref on June 18. Admission to all of the gardens is £5 per adult with all children under 18 free.
