Abergavenny’s historic Gunter Mansion has been saved after campaigners drummed up £150,000 to buy the iconic building.
The Welsh Georgian Trust (WGT) announced last week its fight to keep and restore the building had been won, thanks to substantial grants and its own crowd-funding scheme.
Gunter Mansion will now be purchased by the WGT after grants from the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the Pilgrim Trust pushed the group’s fund-raising efforts to the huge target, donating £125,000 and £25,000 respectively.
Andrew Beckett, Chairman of the group, said, “On behalf of everyone involved in supporting this project we would like to make public our heartfelt thanks to the trustees of the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the Pilgrim Trust. Without their help it is very doubtful that we would have succeeded.
“We now have a fantastic opportunity to make Gunter Mansion a great asset to Abergavenny and this part of Wales. We will use it to allow people to experience a fascinating and important part of our history, which will resonate with people on so many different levels.”
The Mansion is a Grade II-listed, largely 17th century mansion with deep and rich ties to Abergavenny’s role in Catholic history.
