Visitors to Abergavenny will have yet another reason to stroll down the popular Cibi Walk precinct after the opening of a new sweet shop.

Joining a number of thriving confectionary businesses, Maizies Sweet Shop opened on Saturday November 20 and has already proven to be a massive hit amongst customers.

The store is owned by Melanie Rich, who also owns Rosie and Izzy’s Coffee shop in Cibi Walk, with the new sweet shop managed by Melanie’s daughter Millie who also acts as manager at Rosie and Izzy’s.

The prospect of opening a sweet shop has been something both Melanie and Millie have been thinking of for some time, and when the lease on the small building beside the café became available they acted fast to secure the premises and begin the process of starting their new venture.

Speaking to the Chronicle, Maizie’s Sweet shop manager Millie-May Rich said: “In regards to securing the lease for the building and opening it all came about quite fast.

‘’A neighbouring business in Cibi Walk, Mothers Nature Goodies had the lease and once we found out they were giving it up we thought it would be ideal given the location to our other business.”

Maizie’s Sweet Shop sells a wide range of confectionary produce such as chocolate, sweets and soft drinks, specialising in an American range of sweets including Hersheys chocolate and theatre boxes.

The shop has weekly deliveries of sweets from suppliers in Cardiff and Bristol, but also provides a range of around 14 custom mixes put together by Millie herself.

One of such mixes is the Abergavenny Mix, a mixture bag of sweets themed towards the town and local businesses.

Included in the mix are sweets such as gummy pint bottles to represent town pubs, chocolate fish and chips for restaurants as well as Green Apple Millions for the grass in Bailey Park.

Maizies also tailors towards adults as well as kids with old school retro range of sweets such as coconut mushrooms and lemon sherbets.

All of Millie’s produce is labelled with information on ingredients and possible allergens, and the store is all-inclusive with a range of sweets to accommodate different dietary requirements including vegan, gluten-free, diary-free and sugar-free sweets.

The store is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm, and Sundays from 10am to 4pm.

The business has proven so popular that Millie is thinking of extending the opening hours of the shop to cater for the demand.

Millie added: “We’ve had such a warm and welcome reception from everyone in this amazing town and once again I am overwhelmed by all the support, thank you!”
