Danish design and retail brand, Tiger, is opening its 78th UK store in Abergavenny later this month.

The variety store, which sells own-brand Scandinavian design homeware goods from stationery to spices, will occupy the vacant unit on the corner of Cross Street and Flannel Street, next door to Boots.

The move to Abergavenny has seen Tiger create five new jobs, three full-time and two part-time.

Headquartered in Copenhagen, Tiger was founded in 1995 by Lennart Lajboschitz and has since expanded into 29 countries worldwide. Since the beginning of 2015, Tiger has opened more than 190 stores globally and it continues to grow with an average of two stores opening a week. Tiger currently has 603 stores.

Kate Methuen-Ley, co-director of Tiger in Wales, said: “We are very excited to bring Tiger to Abergavenny in a prime retail spot where shoppers can experience the variety of fun but functional products available at Tiger stores.

“Abergavenny is a perfect location for Tiger, it’s so vibrant, and we hope the store will replicate the success we’ve had in other similar Welsh towns like Carmarthen and Cwmbran. There’s something for everyone at Tiger; you’ll find things you need and things you didn’t even know existed, which is what makes our shopping experience so unique.”

The store will sell products across a range of categories including home, office, music, people, kids and essentials, all of which are sold in whole pounds with the majority priced at £5 and under.

Mrs Methuen-Ley continued, “Tiger’s ethos is all about delivering quality products at affordable prices that consumers will enjoy.

“The brand is known to offer a wide-range of essential items from candles to picture frames, make-up to kitchen crockery, but every month we have a campaign that sees a new range of themed products come into the store.

“This is an exciting concept because the campaigns give the store a different look and feel month-on-month, which is a real attraction for our customers as they’re keen to see what new Tiger-designed items can be picked up!”

In 2014, the parent company of Tiger, Zebra A\S, recorded a 68% rise in pre-tax profits to £18.6 million and expanded into France, Austria, Estonia, the Czech Republic and Cyprus for the first time.

The Tiger store in Abergavenny is leased by directors, Kate Methuen-Ley and Helen Corsi-Cadmore, who co-own seven other Tiger stores in the UK.
