A TEN-YEAR-OLD cub scout from Gilwern has been given an award for bravery after keeping cool in a family crisis which saw him put his first aid skills into practice.
Bowen Wiltshire, a member of !st Gilwern Cubs, immediately took charge of a potentially serious situation when his mother was taken ill at home.
Mother, Rachel said, ’In November I was taken poorly at home which resulted in me collapsing in pain, Bowen who is only 10 years old took control of the situation making sure I was safe and in the recovery position and breathing while calling 999.
’While on the phone to the call handler he confidently gave my medical history and explained what had happened. Bowen also managed to contact his dad from a different phone telling him that I was in trouble and that I was poorly and that he had called the emergency services for help.
’He managed the two calls together while comforting his little sister and checking my breathing and response; assisting me until paramedics arrived to take over my care.
’Bowen also managed to get my medication together and sort clothing as he knew I would need a trip to hospital. He let paramedics know it was safe to respond and what had happened in a precise manner.’
Last Friday, Bowen received the Chief Commissioner award for Bravery from cubs leader David Carlyon, known to his cubs as Baloo. The award is only rarely given, but Bowen was recognised for holding his nerve during the ordeal.
Rachel added, ’Bowen has shown what it takes to be a true hero in his compassion and care for others and to say we are proud of our humble young man really doesn’t scratch the surface.
’Without the skills shown at cubs I cannot imagine how he might have reacted but he knew what to do and how to do it well. We never really understood the importance of teaching kids so young these important life skills until recently.’
