ABERGAVENNY Bowls Club had a day to remember last Saturday when they thrashed Pontymister Athletic in their own backyard.

Pontymister are one of the leading clubs in the division and Abergavenny won on three rinks to record a comfortable victory by 87 shots to 65.

After being all square at 11 shots each on the fourteenth end, the rink of Mathew Vale won six of the remaining seven ends to win their game by 21 shots to 12.

John Beaton's rink was involved in a close game for the first seven ends but then took control, never allowing the opposition back into the game, to win by 27 shots to 11.

After being down by 13 shots to 11 on the sixteenth end, Ieuan Jenkins' rink scored nine shots whilst conceding only one over the final five ends.

This enabled them to win their game by 20 shots to 14. The rink of Robert Poynter dropped ten shots on ends two and three. They never recovered this deficit and were eventually defeated by 28 shots to 19.

Bedwas and Trethomas were the visitors to Avenue Road for a GBL game. Each team won on one rink with the third rink being drawn.

Although the game was close, Bedwas and Trethomas just prevailed by 57 shots to 52. The victorious rink for Abergavenny was that of John Whomersley.

Although they were eight shots behind after nine ends, they turned thing round by scoring 13 shots without reply over the next nine ends. They then held on to win by 16 shots to 15.

Gareth Jones rink was involved in a close game throughout but had managed to build a five shot lead by the nineteenth end.

However, the opposition rink then scored five shots over the last two ends. This enabled them to level the scores and draw the game at 20 shots each.

The rink of Bill Cooke never got into their game until the sixteenth end. By this time they were 16 shots down but then they reduced the deficit to lose by six shots.

The previous week-end saw three club members involved in the finals of the MBA knock out competitions, which were played at Caldicot.

John Beaton and Robert Poynter were successful in the Over 60's Pairs Competition. They defeated R. Peart and K. Driscoll of Abercarn by 28 shots to 11.

The Abergavenny pair took command of the game after a fairly close first few ends. Such was their control that the Abercarn players could win only five of the nineteen ends played.

The Abergavenny pair has now reached the last 16 of the all Wales finals which will be played at Llandrindod Wells in two weeks time.

Jack Vale played Joe Mower in the final of the U16 competition. Unfortunately, Joe Mower had been able to gain some experience of the green in a match earlier in the day. This experience enabled him to gain a large early lead and although Jack Vale more than held his own in the second half of the game, he lost by 21 shots to 10.

This week- end Abergavenny play Blaina in the MBA at Avenue Road and travel to Pontymister Athletic for a GBL game.

Gilwern Bowls Club made the short journey to Abergavenny to play Bailey Park in the G.B.L. three rink league. The journey was in vain, as Bailey Park proved too strong.

Gilwern only winning rink, was skipped by R. Mathias.
