Police are warning people in the Abergavenny area to stay safe and aware after a report of a bogus caller operating in the town.

Police are investigating reports that a mane in his 30s knocked the door of a lone female and stated that he was from an electricity company and requested entry into the property.

As he did not have an logos on his clothing or a logo on his van except from the words "power cut" he was refused entry.

He then said that he would be back on Monday and would need the householder to leave her property for 15 minutes while he worked inside. As she closed the door the woman noticed a second man coming from the rear of her property.

A police spokesman said, "Please ensure that you correctly check a person's identity if they attend at your property even to the extent of calling the company they are claiming to be from to confirm their identity, any genuine caller will be happy to wait while you do this.

"You do not have to allow anyone into your property if you are not happy to and if you have any doubts about their identification please call 101 to report them to the police so that we can speak to them and clarify that they are genuine.

"You can arrange to set up a password with your utility company, so a genuine employee will be able to provide you with your password as a security measure.

"Please also ensure that your rear door is locked and secure at all times especially when answering your front door."
