THE Blaenavon Blues' debut performance at the 'Memorial ground' is one they will look to forget as a visiting Undy Athletic christened the new pitch with a 0-5 victory.
To be fair, Undy produced some superb football and well deserved the win.
The Blues should have taken an early lead when a mistake by an Undy defender allowed James Cox a free run on goal but the young striker failed to take advantage of the mistake.
The visitors took the lead midway through the first half when Blues defender Brad Jones brought down an Undy striker in the box. The well struck penalty went in after hitting the crossbar twice.
Undy doubled their lead just before half time with the goal of the game - a volley from the edge of the box, which left Blues keeper Lee Jones no chance.
The second half was all one way traffic as the Blues failed to get into the game. Poor discipline raised its head again as a frustrated Blues picked up a number of yellow cards and Darren Harris was dismissed. Undy went on to score three second half goals which fired them to a 0-5 win and to the top of the Gwent County league table.
This weekend the Blues travel to Cwmtillery to face Abertillery Excelsior's. kick-off is at 3pm.
Govilon - 3
Chepstow Town - 4
Govilon lost by the odd goal in seven in last Saturday's Gwent County Division One table top encounter.
Chepstow who arrived at Govilon boasting a run of six consecutive victories in which they hadn't conceded a goal, were soon under pressure, and were happy to clear for a corner after a storming Craig Thomas run had their defence stretched early on.
Andy Spiers caused them more problems with a run similar to Thomas's and Rhys Whiteman's instinctive drive was only just wide of the target. Leon Gilchrist also just missed out when his effort narrowly sailed over the bar.
However, on the half hour mark it was Chepstow who struck first when their raid pulled the Govilon defence out of position and Goodwin netted.
Craig Norman went close with a headed effort from a set piece as Govilon searched for an equaliser. Early in the second half Govilon's keeper Sam Morris did well to save a shot which he saw late through a forest of legs but had little chance when Dunn found himself free in the box as the Chepstow striker hammered home a shot on the turn to double the visitors advantage. It was after an hour that Govilon were able to reduce the arrears when Gilchrist's volley found the top corner of Baynton's goal, but the good work was soon undone as Chepstow scored and once again it was from close range. Govilon's Ben Bannon produced real artistry as he carved his way through the Chepstow defence and fired past Baynton to give Govilon renewed hope and reduce the arrears to 2-3, but Chepstow restored their advantage when a thirty yard strike flew into Morris' goal. Undaunted Govilon continued to press and with the Chepstow defence in a tangle it was one of their own defenders who rocketed the ball into the roof of his own net. to set up a nervy finale.
Govilon travel to Cwmbran based Coed Eva on Saturday, before facing another top side, PILCS at home the following Saturday.
