Blaenavon Blues - 2
Abercarn United - 2
BLAENAVON Blues picked up a valuable league point on Saturday with a battling performance against Abercarn United.
The Gwent County Division One side showed some good character to come back from a goal down on two occasions, something that will please Blues manager Chris Mason.
However, what will not please him is the fact that the Blues gave away two sloppy goals.
Abercarn took the lead mid-way through the first half when a hopeful ball over the top was not dealt with by Blues keeper Jones and the United striker had an easy finish.
Abercarn looked a threat throughout the first half as they played the long hopeful ball up field, and with a strong wind in their favour they had a lot of joy with this tactic.
Fortunately the Blues dug in deep and managed to hold out until half-time without conceding another goal.
The second-half was a different affair as the Blues dominated the game and at times played some attractive attacking football.
The Blues were soon level when new signing Del Ewers got himself on the end of a Parfitt cross with a simple tap in on the far post.
The Blues hard work looked to have been all for nothing when they failed to deal with an Abercarn attack, as the United attacker fired home from 15 yards.
Yet the Blues must be given credit for their character as they stormed back into the game and dominated possession for long periods.
The Blues finally got their just reward when returning front man Darren Harris lobbed the stranded Abercarn keeper.
The Blues had chances to go on and win the match, but although they continue to create numerous chances in games, they are still lacking that killer instinct in front of goal.
Next up, the Blues will face the tough task of visiting Pentwynmawr in the Fourth Round of the FAW Welsh Trophy.
The clubs met in the league only a few weeks ago when the Blues threw away a one goal lead on two occasions and went on to lose the game 4-2.
A win will see the Blues through to the quarter final stage, when the North/South divide in the competition is scrapped and a trip up to North Wales could very well be on the cards.
Kick-off is at 2pm.
