Blaenavon Blues Ladies - 2
Cardiff City Ladies - 12
BLAENAVON Blues Ladies were given a footballing lesson on Sunday when they were knocked out of the semi-final of the Welsh Cup by last season's champions Cardiff City.
Blaenavon got off to the worst possible start when they conceded after only a minute of play, but drew level shortly after when striker Tenah French scored a super goal.
On the 21st minute the Blues went behind again, then three minutes later Cardiff scored their third of the game.
Blaenavon at this stage were still battling and it was French again who capitalised on some complacency from the Cardiff keeper for a superb finish.
However the contest was over after 38 minutes when the City side scored three unanswered goals in an eight minute spell to make it 6-2 going into the interval.
The second half was a totally one sided affair and Cardiff showed their strength in depth as they made three changes and brought on three current U19 Welsh internationals as the Blues conceded another six goals.
In goal for the Blues was Elisa Williams who was outstanding in making save after save that prevented the Blues from going down by more goals than they did.
The Blues players will be disappointed with their performance as they did not play to their full potential. Whereas the Cardiff side put in a totally professional performance to outplay the Blues.
What must not be forgotten is the fact that Cardiff City Ladies have been around for 33 years and have won the Welsh Cup for the past seven years, as well as playing in Europe season after season. Whereas the Blues are a young side who are only in their second year of senior football.
Blaenavon now need to pick themselves up and push on as they still have six league games remaining and another semi final to play.
They have drawn UWIC away in the League Cup semi final which is due to be played on Wednesday, May 13.
This evening the Blues host UWIC at home in a re-arranged league game with a 6.30pm kick-off.
