THE 1st Crickhowell and Llangattock Beaver Scout Colony will celebrate its first birthday after a year of fun and challenge.
On February 22 12 months ago, Beaver Scout Leader, Sarah Williams took up the task of opening a new Beaver Scout Colony, the Group's youngest section and set about bringing together boys and girls between six and eight years old for plenty of new adventures and learning experiences.
The Beaver Colony is now a thriving group of 24 and is looking forward to its second year of adventure.
This day also holds a special significance for the Colony as February 22 is celebrated throughout the world as Founder's Day; the birthday of the founder of Scouting, Lord Robert Baden-Powell. The Colony will be commemorating the day with a big Birthday Party at the following Friday meet, complete with all the trimmings of hats, streamers, jelly, ice-cream and birthday cake.
There will be plenty of fun with favourites like Dinosaur Tag, Hedgehogs and Port - Starboard. Everyone is thoroughly looking forward to the day and as the weeks go by the excitement mounts in the children involved.
Guy Farmer, aged seven, a Beaver Scout said, "I have been a Beaver Scout for a year and I have already been on lots of adventures and had a sleepover with my friends. I can't wait to do even more exciting things this year!"
Sarah Williams said, "I am really proud of all the work the Beavers and their Parents have put in over the past year to make the Colony the success it is today. We've had loads of fun this year going on several trips to places like Techniquest in Cardiff, Big Pit in Blaenavon and Raglan Castle. We have taken part in an adventurous Medieval Sleepover in the Scout Hut during the summer holidays, and joined in many community activities. There are plans for more adventures in the next twelve months which I can't wait to be a part of, I have just as much fun as the young people.
Scouting in Crickhowell and Llangattock is growing and our greatest challenge for 2009 is recruiting enough adults to be able to run events for our ever-growing base of young people. As an adult you will get just as much fun as the young people, with opportunities to challenge yourself and gain new skills," she added.
