BAILEY Park could play host to a one day alternative dance music festival next year reports GEMMA HARRIS.
The one day festival, planned for June 2012 will aim to teach youngsters about a positive lifestyle and attitude to drink and drugs.
A report on the proposed event was discussed by councillors at a recent Bryn y Cwm Area Committee meeting.
With the working title of Breaking Out it is hoped the festival will encourage young people to make positive choices in life through the medium of music, dance and positive role models so there will be no alcohol sales.
The target age group for the festival will be 11 to 25 years old although people not within this demographic would not be excluded.
Proposed for a Saturday in June next year it will run from 10am to 10pm. The main stage would accommodate a number of alternative musical artists throughout the day but it would not be in continual use throughout the day with breaks in the music.
In addition to the main stage there will be a variety of workshops on lifestyle, sport and dance.
The event will be non-profit making and any surplus will be used to invest in future events if this one is successful.
It is not proposed to make this an annual event in Abergavenny but use it as a prototype and move it around the county.
Area services officer Tom James said, "The group is looking for support from the area committee, Friends of Bailey Park are fully supportive.
"The person who is driving this has been an integral part in a number of Abergavenny events and organisations including the ice fayre, intergenerational rounders and 7 Corners."
All councillors were in support of the festival as long as issues such as toilets, refreshments and noise levels were considered.
