WE are trying to trace any relatives or people who might

help us in our research of the Anderson family, who lived

in and around Abergavenny throughout much of the 19th

and into the 20th century.

Family legend has it that the Andersons originally came

from Aberdeen, Scotland and it is, of course, a Scottish

name, but so far we have traced back to John Anderson

(1809-1887), a gardener who was born in or near

Abergavenny, and in 1881 was known to be living with his

wife Hannah (1814-1882, surname unknown) in the lodge

of Abergavenny Castle (she was lodge keeper.)

John and Hannah had six children:

Francis (1835-1882) whose subsequent lineage moved to

Worcestershire.

Mary Ann (1836-1863), last known in Neath, Breconshire.

William (1839-1891), who married Clara Isabella Elizabeth

Dawkins and had eight or nine children, most born and

still living in the Abergavenny area into the early 20th

century - perhaps some may live locally.

We know of sons William Henry (b. 1867); Frederick

George (b. 1869), whose daughter Marjorie Isabella (b.

1897 or 1898), married Edward D. Jones in Cardiff, in

1926.

One daughter Florence (b. 1872) married a Charles Davies

1896; another daughter, Clara Hannah (b.1874) married

Thomas Bush in 1900.

Another son, John Harold (b.1876) moved to Hereford,

while we know almost nothing of Basil (b. 1879), Glady

Mary (b. 1882) and Godfrey Charlie (b. 1884) except on

the 1891 and 1901 census they were still living with their

mother in Abergavenny.

John Arthur (1841-1911), who founded our lineage,

immigrated to the USA in 1870, but later returned to

Abergavenny as a widower, where he remarried Eliza Jones

in 1880, moving to Cheltenham, then Carshalton, Surrey

and finally Burnham-on-Crouch.

Their children later moved to Teddington, Middlesex;

Norwood in London; High Wycombe; Worthing; and

Southampton.

Sarah (1843-?) who married John George Jones (b. 1833,

Abergavenny) in 1868 and whose subsequent lineage lived

in the Pontypool area.

Charles Jones, (b. 1869(; James William Jones (b. 1870);

George Jones (1872); Llewellyn Jones (1878).

George (1848-1906), married Martha Pugh and again

their children lived in th Pontypool area, with a son

George Clifford (b.1875) and daughter Gertrude Sarah (b.

1878) who married Albert Matthews in 1912.

Although we have managed to trace some of John Arthur's

descendants, all contact with any of these other

Abergavenny, Pontypool or Welsh border Anderson

branches has been lost.

We are especially curious if there are any Andersons still

living in the Abergavenny area, if so, you might be

relatives.
