IT is hoped a jazz festival in Abergavenny will take place despite problems with the organising.

Members of Abergavenny Town Council said at last Wednesday night's meeting that the event needed more organising from them than what they expected.

Councillor Martin Hickman said at a previous projects meeting it was decided that John Gibbon wanted the council to underwrite the proposed jazz event that he wanted to stage.

He said, "The project was handed to the events committee and we have since had two further meetings with him. These meetings were extremely poorly attended. It very quickly became clear that Mr Gibbon not only wanted us to underwrite the evening but that we would organise the majority of events.

"He picked a date in July at the Castle and asked Ben Jones from the Kings Arms to run the bar. He would do the advertising."

Councillor Hickman said the council were requested to organise ticket sales, toilets, insurance, tents, security, police involvement, manning the gates, cash, lighting, first aid and anything that "cropped up."

Councillor John Prosser said, "I don't think this council can take the baton and run with it."

Councillors agreed to continue discussing the matter as they have already committed £1,200 to the event.
