Madam, Following last week's letter requesting a 20mph speed limit, I would like to reassure the residents of the town that I have been actively trying to have such a speed limit introduced into the centre of Aberystwyth. Last year I suggested at an Aberystwyth Traffic Management Consultative Committee that in order to combat the growing problem with speeding traffic a 20mph speed limit should be introduced. I was told that such a speed limit would have to be self policing and in order to gauge the actual speed of vehicles a traffic survey was conducted in the town. The results of the survey were positive but unfortunately due to the fact that Bridge Street, Great Darkgate Street, North Parade and Northgate Street are part of the trunk road A487 it was not deemed appropriate at the moment to introduce such a speed limit. Obviously I was very disappointed on behalf of the town's residents who suffer 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from the problem of speeding cars. There is, though, some positive news in that Ceredigion County Council has recently agreed to a 20mph speed limit in a large area of Cardigan. The situation in Cardigan will be monitored closely and I have already asked for the issue to be brought once again before the next Traffic Committee Meeting. Yours etc, Cllr Ceredig Davies.
