FROM wild horses to runaway turtles, the streets of Abergavenny have been literally overrun in recent weeks by all sorts of strange creatures.

Late in April a gang of six four-legged rogues galloped through the town like a scene out of Black Beauty before the boys in blue caught, tethered and brought those freedom loving beasts to heel.

If that wasn’t enough action to keep us entertained for an entire year, earlier this week Abergavenny Officers announced they had pursued and captured a runaway tortoise on Station Road.

No-one knows this opportunist reptile’s name or from whence it came. They only know it’s been found safe and free from harm.

One concerned member of the public has suggested the tortoise was perhaps being used by an illegal betting syndicate to race against hares, but according to animal welfare officers this would appear unlikely.

In all seriousness, if you know who the traffic stopping tortoise belongs to please call into Abergavenny Police Station. Open 8am till 8pm
