A local man has completed the impressive challenge of running 46.8 laps around a park in Abergavenny to begin his journey to next year’s London Marathon.

Alastair Masterton finished his marathon around Bailey Park having been selected by Mind in Gwent to be their official runner at the 2027 iteration of one of the the world’s biggest running events. His challenge, which began closer to home, kickstarted his fundraising campaign to help those who struggle with mental health issues within the Gwent region.

The challenge brought together local runners, supporters and members of the community on Saturday August 22 as they were invited to join Aber’s very own marathon man for as much - or as little - of the route as they wanted to.

“Running has been an outlet for me whenever I am feeling stressed, drained or overwhelmed mentally,” he said.

“I’m running to raise awareness of mental health services and encourage wellbeing conversations while completing some silly running challenges.”

“All donations are greatly appreciated and will help to keep me motivated as I train, especially during the cold, dark winter months!”

Masterton is a familiar face in the town and is a regular at the Llanfoist Crossing Parkrun, the caffeine and cardio club and other running events in the area. He is also passionate about promoting running and exercise as a way to maintain positive mental health and wellbeing. His previous challenges include running 5 kilometres around Abergavenny Garden Centre among other wild and wacky missions Alastair has gained a reputation for.

“We’re delighted to have Alastair representing Mind in Gwent at the 2027 London Marathon. His enthusiasm, creativity and passion for running make him a fantastic ambassador for our work, and we love the way he is using his own experience of running to open up conversations about mental health and wellbeing.”
