An Abergavenny grandmother plans to achieve a lifetime’s ambition with a 7,000 foot sky dive – and raise money for the children’s charity Barnardo’s Cymru.

Veronica Williams, chairwoman of the Abergavenny Barnardo’s Helper Group, aims to take part in a tandem parachute jump at the Swansea Sky Dive Centre on Saturday (July 9) but the date is dependent on weather conditions.

This year, Barnardo’s celebrates its 150th anniversary and the Abergavenny group with Mrs Williams were among those invited to a Royal garden party at Buckingham Palace in May in celebration.

“I’ve also had a milestone birthday and it has been my lifelong wish to do a sky dive,” said Mrs Williams.

“So it seemed a great opportunity to raise funds for a charity which is so very special to me.

“I have always felt that anything is possible. You have to set yourself goals in life and try and achieve them.”

Mrs Williams, who has three grown-up children and two grandchildren, said, “My family think it’s a very courageous thing to do but that I must be stark, raving mad – though my sons in law have offered to check and pack the parachute!”

Her children said, “We are so very proud of our mum being so adventurous and daring to take on the challenge with this sky dive to raise money.”
