IT was a case of pure theatre at Avenue Road on the weekend as Aber played Premier League side Ynysygerwyn in a great game which ended with a great finish.
To set the scene Abergavenny needed 13 off the final over for a win. They hit two fours, but a brilliant save on the boundary denied them a third. However, the next ball went straight through the legs of the same fielder and a scrambled, solitary run off the last ball secured Aber a memorable victory.
Earlier the away side had got away to a fine start, scoring at a run a ball, but a fine catch by Alex Denning off Nathan Byrne and the introduction of the spinners Andy Timpson and Mike Baillon restrained the scoring rate.
G. Atkins riding his luck and aided by some lacklustre fielding reached 92, ensuring the batting side reached 219-5 at the end of their 40 overs.
Abergavenny were given an excellent start by team captain Ryland Wallace and Mike Baillon, who matched each other run for run.
A total of 92 runs were on the board when Wallace was LBW for 40. Nick Kinman (23) helped add 50 for the third wicket and whilst wickets fell at the other end, Baillon batted majestically on reaching 98 before being bowled, attempting to drive the leg spinner through the offside. Alex Denning then took over the run chase and with the help of Byrne drove the home side to victory.
An enjoyable day's cricket, back-dropped by the 'volcano' Blorenge smoking in the background and plenty of planes in the sky.
