Croesyceiliog - 3

OLD rivals Croesyceiliog were put to the sword by an Abergavenny team in no mood for compromise under a baking hot September sun.

Forwards and Backs combined well and as individual units were better than their opponents in all phases of play and levels of skill.

The forwards dominated the scrum, taking Croesy ball at will which left the home side with no platform to attack other than their share of line-out ball from first phase possession.

The front five certainly had the measure of the home side with front row in particular rock solid. Rhys Willard had another fine game this time at Number six.

The half backs Lewis Evans and Danny Haymond linked well with the forwards allowing the backs to sparkle courtesy of the dominance up front.

Haymond's positional sense and kicking out of hand is improving game by game.

Fine handling skills led to a Leighton Samuels' try after he chipped the full back to gather and score near the posts.

The pick of the bunch had to be Rob Sevenoaks' 30 yard burst into the line leaving the defence flat footed as he sprinted like a steam train for the line.

Stuart Davies on as sub, capped things with a 60 yard sprint after gathering a spilt ball to score under the posts to secure the bonus point victory 31 - 3.

With bonus points in each game so far and no shortage of tries the supporters are already licking their lips with the thought of a successful season in Division Three East.

The coaching staff will of course remind the players that you are only as good as the last game.

Crickhowell RFC - 11

Hafodrynys RFC - 27

DESPITE losing, a much improved Crickhowell performance saw them give them Division Six South East league leaders a run for their money at Parc Broyd.

For their part Hafodyrynys took everything on offer. Three excellent tries came through the visitors' wing men, but Crickhowell gifted them two through a sloppy defensive scrummage and an indecisive kick that was charged down.

With a mountain to climb to get any sort of purchase back on the game in the second-half, the green shoots of recovery started to appear sporadically for Crickhowell.

Yet although the Parc Broyd outfit made three clearcut try scoring chances, they failed to capitalise.

Two Adam Howels penalty goals and a Shane Burton try made up Crickhowell's points tally.

Although Hafodrynys deserved their win, Crickhowell were left disappointed that they gave away two sloppy tries and failed to be a bit more clinical with their finishing.

This Saturday Crickhowell face St Josephs at home. Kick-off 2.30pm.

Blaenavon RFC - 32

Usk RFC - 27

Usk Travelled to Blaenavon in confident mood after two good wins in the bag, yet the 'Blav' proved once again that their ground is never an easy place to knock out a win.

The game started at great pace and within five minutes Lee Moulton scored a try in the corner to put Usk 5-0 up with a missed conversion.

Blaenavon answered with an unconverted try of their own soon after to level the score.

Enjoying the upper hand, Usk were camped in the Blaenavon half, when a scrum on the homeside's 22 produced quick ball allowing Andy Peggington at outside half to produce a lovely ball for Dicky jenkins who danced through the Blaenavon defence to score a superb individual try.

Usk's quiet confidence was soon shattered when Blaenavon scored another try to draw even.

The visitors soon followed with a try of their own when Emlyn Jones caught the ball 40 yards out and made a brilliant darting run to score another unconverted effort.

An unrelenting Usk attacked again after some great link work by the Forwards and backs which saw Ben Papp show some deft ball control to put Ben Davies in the corner.

With the score at 20-10 Usk's heads were up, but Blaenavon bounced back with a converted try.

The try fest was to continue with another great run from Usk's Andy Farrell who linked up with Peggington, who passed it to John Green for the ever present Papp to pop up and finish it off under the posts for Moulton to convert.

Into the second-half and playing up the hill against a strong Blaenavon side who had everything to play for, Usk had to make a strong show of it if they were to hang onto their lead.

Unfortunately for Usk, Blaenavon's hunger for their first win of the season in Division Five East proved too much for the visitors as the homeside run in two tries, a conversion and a penalty to seize the day.

On the positive side Usk came away with two bonus points and some great performances from a number of players which they will look to take into their home game against Brynithel this Saturday.
