USK firsts put last week's heavy defeat firmly in the past when they comfortably beat Croesyceiliog at the Athletic Club Ground.

After winning the toss the visitors elected to bat and despite Vinnie Kay picking up an early wicket, Croesy progressed without too much alarm to 88-1, until Ollie James and Owen Watkins struck in successive overs.

However, Croesy recovered and at 180-3 in the 41st over, were well placed to launch an assault in the final few overs; Usk had other ideas though.

Watkins picked up further scalps, as did Neil Perrett and Tom Robinson, as Croesy collapsed to 204 all out, losing their last six wickets for a mere seven wickets. Watkins returned the pick of the figures, with 8-0-31-4.

Usk's reply got off to a steady start, as Matt Birrell and Mark Tamplin shared an opening stand of 51.

Birrell (81) and Ollie James (55) then put on 107 for the second wicket and carry Usk to within sight of victory.

Like Croesy before them, Usk had a little flurry of wickets and a slight scare towards the end, but made it over the finish line with four wickets and 22 overs to spare.

Birrell's 81, included seven fours and three sixes, while James struck nine fours and a six.

Meanwhile down at Chepstow, the seconds experienced a tougher afternoon. Captain for the day Sanjay Thapan, won the toss and decided to field.

Chepstow got off to a flyer as their openers took the attack to Usk, however wickets for Dave Egerton and Jake Roderick checked the hosts' run rate.

Usk did well in the middle overs to restrict Chepstow, as spinners Tony Kear and Julian Smith put the brakes on further.

Chepstow managed to keep wickets in hand though and post a respectable 214-7 from their allotted 50 overs.

Usk's reply started disastrously as the top three were all dismissed within the opening five overs.

At 12-3 the visitors were staring down the barrel. Tony Kear (41) then decided to take the attack to Chepstow, as he and Dave Egerton added 53 for the fourth wicket.

Both soon fell within a short time of each other, and Usk's looked dead and buried at 73-5. Jake Roderick (50) had other ideas. Firstly, with Phil Stephens, 50 was added, before Gareth Webber joined Roderick, and a further 24 was added.

Roderick then went, along with Usk's hopes, at 147-7. With Huw Rogers (10-2-26-5) blasting out the tail, Usk finished on 155 all out; a defeat by 49 runs.

Next weekend sees a busy bank holiday weekend of cricket for Usk. On Saturday, the firsts (at home) and seconds (away) play their respective counterparts from Abergavenny.

Matches begin at 12pm. On Sunday, Usk then plays host to the Regional Finals of the National Twenty20 Competition. Play kicks off at 10:30am, as Sully, Mochdre and Bournemouth compete in the round robin.

Finally, on Monday, Usk then take on their St Fagans counterparts; firsts at home and seconds away. Play begins at 1pm.
